Following months unrest and complaints about the lavish lifestyle of the children of government officials, the Nepalese government made a move to ban all social media in the country.

This act sparked a series of protests, which would eventually topple the Nepalese government. The protests were largely organized by younger Nepalese, although the organizers have condemned some of the more violent actions of the protests, including burning down the Nepalese Parliament building.
While the mass protests were sparked by a ban on social media, the underlying causes are corruption and inequality. While those in government and their relatives can also become very wealthy off of corruption, Nepal as a whole is an impoverished nation. Images were circulating on social media of the children of Nepalese politicians posing with designer handbags or on lavish vacations. Many of these posts were captioned with comments about them being nepo babies.
The protests are supported in some part by the Nepalese military. While the military has declared martial law, they also remain in talks with protesters to help decide on an interim leader.
